The establishment of the jail in the early 19th century1 —the courthouse—and the station (1898)2 brought prosperity to New Carlisle. On one hand, a gravitational hub emerged for judges, lawyers and prominent figures who were reshaping the built landscape: homes became larger, reflecting the British heritage of the Loyalists. On the other hand, the station brought in even more tourists, continuing the tourism boom that commenced with the steamboats in the second half of the 19th century.3 Attracted by fishing on salmon rivers and the health benefits of bathing in the sea, the upper classes began vacationing in luxury hotels in New Carlisle.4 Lying somewhere between resort and judicial hub, New Carlisle’s idyllic reputation preceded it for some, but left a bitter taste in the mouth of anyone who experienced the penal system.
As such, naming Jail Lane and Station Lane goes beyond the once utilitarian concept of territory, which would have been limited to designating the location of the establishment found there. These place names translate the reality of the different social classes that brushed shoulders and which gave New Carlisle its multivocal identity.
