Some local youngsters worked one summer for Exploration Mondor, a company that was prospecting for gold in the mid-’80s in the Lac Arsenault area. “Back then, I played hockey. I asked the guy from the company to sponsor us, and we had a crest made showing a gold prospector and his basket of gold by the river. We were so proud; it made us feel rich! They never developed it, so when we returned to our high school in Paspébiac, they made fun of us, saying we had worked in the Jello Mine (mine de Jello)!”1

In 2020 and in 2025, new mining exploration companies conducted research in this and other sectors. “The gold potential in the Gaspé Peninsula has been known since 1946, although no mining company has made it its main operation.”2
