Eddie (Edward) Vautier—who was “known to everyone in Shigawake”1 —owned several mills, including one in The Hollow/The Glen. After it was swept away by a storm, he had another one built a little further south, at the place known as Eddie’s Mill.
The burner
Since Eddie needed to dispose of sawdust and bark, a huge burner stood on his property, located close by. The chimney rose so high into the sky that it unwittingly became a landmark for fishers. Eddie’s son recounts the funny situation he found himself in when he discovered the importance of the chimney for navigation.
