Le Green/The Commons [English]

Today, Rue Green (which is part of the official toponymy of New Carlisle) “is reminiscent of the communal pastures where citizens would allow their animals to graze. The pastures were called ‘greens,’ which is where the street gets its name.”¹As such, the terms “Le Green” and “The Commons” came about in the same manner. However, it is “Commons” that is shown on a plan of the town dated in the early 19th century² and mentioned by Thomas Pye in his work Canadian Scenery: District of Gaspé (1866)³ : “[…]  [T]he foreground of this view represents a wood, called the Common, which is a government reserve, and might, with a moderate outlay, be converted into a public park or promenade.” Today, this vocation has been fulfilled and The Commons is a very popular spot. 

New Carlislians share with us the way the landscape has evolved while remaining a gathering place through the generations.
